First woman captain in Siachen

Captain Shiva Chauhan scripted history by becoming the First woman officer to be posted at Siachen. Prior to posting at Siachen at 15,600 feet, Capt. Shiva Chauhan was a part of the unit- ‘Corps of Engineer’. The unit is a combat support team that provides army with combat engineering support, develops infrastructure, and maintains good connectivity to the border roads. She was given the Engineering Regiment in May 2021.

Captain Shiva, was posted at the Kumar post. She underwent rigorous training for a period of three months, said army officials. The Siachen glacier is the highest militarised region in the world. It is in Karakoram range of the Himalayas and is taken care of by the Indian army. The location is at a height of about 15,000 feet and the temperature freezes down up tominus 55 degrees celcius. Siachen region holds great significance for the strategic security of India.

The defence minister of India, “Rajnath Singh” celebrated this moment by taking on to his Twitter handle. He mentioned this:

“Excellent news! I am extremely happy to see more women joining the armed forces and take every challenge in stride. It is an encouraging sign. My best wishes to captain Shiva Chauhan.”, said Rajnath Singh in his tweet.

Captain Shiva from Rajasthan is a Bengal Sapper Officer, one of few existing regiments of the former Bengal Presidency. She has completed her education from Udaipur and holds a bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering.

After becoming the first woman to hold on position of captain in the Indian Army at Siachen Glacier, Shiva Chauhan has set up a new milestone for women’s participation in the arm and became an inspiration to many.
