As of November 2022, India is the part of G20 Troika. Troika contains the previous, current and upcoming Presidencies as Indonesia, India, and Brazil. India has officially taken over the presidency from Joko Widodo, the president of Indonesia.

One Earth One World One family is the theme adopted by India. This looks to be inspired by the historical belief of Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam meaning World is a family.

There exists a common confusion about the difference between G7 and G20. The prime reason can be the commonality of members of G7 and G20. The G7 is a grouping of western nations, the G20 manages to get leaders from both developed and emerging economies around the table, representing a far broader range of views.

Factors that make it more than just a conference:

 i) Timings: The world is passing through a phase of extreme geopolitical and geoeconomic stress such as the Russia-Ukraine war, post-pandemic transition, and brewing human rights tension in Afghanistan. Thus, the presidency of India carries enough potential to bring in major changes in the global political scenario.

ii) Voice for the Global South: The structure of the G20 is inclusive, has global reach, attention to implementation, and grassroots underpinning from civil society organizations. It is in this spirit that India has invited six developing countries, including Bangladesh, Mauritius, Oman, the UAE, Nigeria and Egypt, as guests to the G20 summit in Delhi in September 2023.

iii) India’s growing credibility: It is an opportunity for India to undertake a mostly balanced series of conferences. The long-standing diplomatic position of India especially since the war in Ukraine has clarified that India would not bow down to any kind of external influence. Such a stance will allow all the members to put up their issues freely and fairly.

iv) Structure of the G20: Its structure, inclusive global reach, attention to implementation, and grassroots underpinning from civil society After India takes over the presidency it will continue for one more year to be in the pilot’s cabin as the immediate past president.

v) Tourism sector: The places for the events decided reflects that India has tried to bring in cities of historical importance to global attention. Over 200 meetings will take place in 56 cities, most of them being semi-urban or to put it the other way metropolitan in making. The conduct of G20 events there would provide boost to local tourism, culture and businessmen

The world will continue keeping its eye on India as India progresseswithG20. The summit is expected to come up with solutions to the challenges of today’s world. India would also look forwards to deals that serve the interest of its people well. The domestic politics of India and global politics might get turns and twists as we continue with it.
