Odisha to face Cyclone Yaas in COVID crisis

Bristi Adhikary/ The state will face the third cyclone simultaneously in a row for two years. Last year in covid crisis Odisha faces Cyclone Amphan and Cyclonic Storm ‘FANI’ in 2019.

Currently, the coming of Yaas has been expected to turn dangerous in Bay of Bengal. A low pressure has been created in Andaman and Nicobar Island and is likely to move forward in Odisha and West Bengal in May 26. The fisherman and many others are requested to move to safer places around May 23.

The Odisha State Disaster Management Authority (OSDMA) office in Bhubaneswar has been keeping the track of the cyclone round the clock. Over 800 flood and shelters have already been readied for the people in coastal areas. Other buildings like schools, offices, government building are on vacant and would be used as shelters.

Kamal Lochan Mishra, executive director of OSDMA has said that District officials in Balasore, Bhadrak, Jagatsinghpur and Kendrapara are on high alert. District collectors have been told to take all necessary measures to deal with the situation.

Last year due to covid 80 shelters have been turned into COVID 19 facilities without warning.  Also, this thing has to be kept in mind that the treatment shelters should be kept separated from the shelters for cyclone relief shelters to prevent the devasting pandemic to spread.

Yaas is likely to be the result of climate change since the pandemic alert.
