It was only in 1959 that Jethmalani established his irony in the much hyped ‘[Nanavati case’. Since then, he became a stalwart in criminal law practice. Jethmalani has two sons and two daughters. His son and daughter, Mahesh Jethmalani and Rani Jethmalani are also well-known lawyers now a day.

Before the general elections in 2014, Jethmalani supported Narendra Modi to be the PM. However, soon after Modi became PM, he turned against him. In 2015, when Arun Jaitley filed a defamation case against Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal, Jethmalani had advocated for Kejriwal.

Especially some high profile cases  like Indira Gandhi assassination, Harshad Mehta stock bungling, Ketan Parekh, LK Advani hawala case, Jayalalitha’s undisclosed assets case, Kanimozhi’s defense in Toji, Manu Sharma’s defense of Jessica Lal Murder case, Lalu Prasad in fodder scam , Yeddyurappa’s case in mining scam, Afzal Guru’s case in Parliament attack, Subrata Roy’s defense in Sahara SEBI case and Baba Ramdev’s case in Ramlila Maidan agiation case turned Jethmalani the No1 Criminal lawyer of India.

In 2017, Ram Jethmalani announced his retirement from legal profession. Jethmalani became a Rajya Sabha MP in 1988. Since then, he has been active in mainstream politics. In 1996, Jethmalani became law minister in the government of Atal Bihari Vajpayee.

In the second term of the Atal Bihari Vajpayee government, he was given the Ministry of Urban Development. In 1999, he again became a law minister but due to differences with Chief Justice of Supreme Court Justice AS Anand and Attorney General, the Prime Minister had asked to resign. The Attorney General was Soli Sorabjee at that time.

Renowned Supreme Court lawyer Prashant Bhushan retweeted a tweet by senior journalist Rajdeep Sardesai in which he wrote, “The sad news is coming … Ram Jethmalani, well-known lawyer and perhaps the country’s best criminal lawyer died at the age of 95. ”
