XIM University organized Online Academic-Media Industry Interface Introductory Series

School of Communication, XIM University, Bhubaneswar hosted a webinar on ‘Career Opportunities in Mass Media’ as part of academia-industry interface introductory series. The guest speaker for the session was Mr. Pradip Bagchi, Senior Editor, Times of India, New Delhi. His journalistic career spanning over 30 years has straddled across various media platforms and has experience in India’s top media organizations.

The webinar started with a discussion over the vast aspects a mass media, where student can choose from, as a career choice. He enlightened the students about opportunities in Print, Television and Online Journalism. His further elaboration included examples from Facebook, YouTube and Instagram and how they have become the fastest medium for any sort of information to grab the attention of a vast audience.  He discussed about some very necessary elements such as effective communication, reach and audience engagement among few others, which shall be the key factors, irrespective of the career chosen by the students.

He discussed about the emerging social and digital media,  how one can build a career in future. He said, “content is the king, one can be a creator and distributor of content through social media”. The art and craft of story-telling has been changed by the technology.  Continuing more on story telling, he said that every individual has his own way of weaving stories but working while keeping in mind the psychology of his target audience, makes the work much easier. He also said “Your content should be what public expect not what you want”.  These were some of the many key valuable points shared by Mr. Bagchi during the session.

His talk was followed by a small Q&A session wherein Mr. Bagchi answered the questions put forward by the students on different aspects of journalism. Around 65 UG & PG students of mass communication participated in the webinar. The interactive session started off with an introduction speech by Ms. Debasnata Nayak, UG Ist year, moderated by Mr. Sai Pratyksh Epari, UG Ist year.  Ms. Akankshya Mishra, UG Ist year student of School of Communications proposed a vote of thanks. Dr. Jyoti Ranjan Sahoo, faculty member of school of communications coordinated the event.  Dr. V. Vijay Kumar (Acting Dean) of school of communications always encourages students to organise and be part of academic events.
